G1LI Focuses On...

Education

We seek to provide G1LI youths with fun, educational and inspiring experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). Engaging youths in exciting and accessible STEAM experiences will help them build critical skills and confidence and help prepare them for any career path they choose to pursue. We intend to achieve this through educational workshops, educational field trips and other related activities that feature problem solving and teamwork. It is well established that parents matter greatly for their children’s development and success both in and out of school. Therefore at G1LI, we believe that family engagement in education is crucial so we encourage parent participation and employ family engagement strategies in our approach.

Entrepreneurship

G1LI is committed to providing youths with the knowledge,skills and motivation to encourage entrepreneurial thinking and to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option.

Cultural Awareness

As the world’s second largest continent, Africa is known for its vastly diverse culture and people. There are over 3,000 distinct ethnic groups in Africa. At G1LI we seek to offer avenues to encourage youths to better understand their heritage and identity, through the lens of their culture, values, beliefs and perceptions. We hope to instill confidence and pride within African youth and help them reflect on the rich diversity of their African culture. G1LI youths will engage their peers and community in productive conversation and steer people away from the stereotypical portrayal of Africa. We are also including fun social activities such as cultural events/performances, family dance, potlucks etc. This will strengthen ties to family, motivate new ways of thinking and reinforce youths’ self- worth within their families, homes and community.

Civic Engagement

G1LI youth will be energized to accept the responsibilities of citizenship and become lifelong participants in Canadian democracy. We seek to cultivate youth civic engagement, introduce them to the legislative process and encourage the importance of public service from an early age.
